With cryptic notes on the inner-sleeve - "With blood the Chickenhead rehearses a scene not worth the danger", and "repeating to the mormon tropjans - put your foot on the rock ", the Black Madonna with Infant-child is used on the inner-cover, it's a surreal word-play and incongruity of image that points maybe/probably not to these eleven tracks in various flavours.. 'The Beginning Of Always' sees Marc strike out like Iggy, a jaunty-rock track with Marc singing like Tom Petty, twang held in check, the verses strung between electrified guitar-chords - it's got lots to say for itself before we get the old wig-out at the end - "Should I count on what I might be even though it changes nightly? Maybe this time I'll get better, I'll try harder.. 'The Yes Eye' sees Marc singing like David Sylvian, smooth as chocolate with delicate-piano - a style that continues with 'Tomboyrockstar', where Marc could be a white-boy Gil scott Heron.

It's a killer line, delivered with wisecracking ease that tightropes between empathetic, flat-out funny and downright cruel.. Since 1998's Black Music , Thompson's emotional, enigmatic songs, loaded with mordant wit, humanity, and smarts and liberally pin-pricked with chitlin-circuit showmanship and brooding alt-rock sturm und drang (imagine, if possible, the spawn of Arthur Lee, Solomon Burke, and Paul Westerberg), have been awarded a level of approval far exceeding his sales or name-recognition status.. But he deserves to be heard by more than insiders or the hipster musicans (Marc Ribot, Oren Bloedow, Meshell Ndegeocello, Van Dyke Parks, Stuart Matthewman) collaborating on his third CD, Black Yankee Rock —which, bolstered by Craig Street's nuanced but firm production, glides seamlessly between dreamy atmospherics and '70s folk rock.

With help from an all-star cast of supporting musicians, including legendary arranger Van Dyke Parks, multireedist Roy Nathanson, bassist/chanteuse Me’Shell Ndegéocello, Cibo Matto member Yuka Honda, and loyal collaborator Marc Ribot, Thompson began recording Black Yankee Rock the day after the 2004 presidential election..
