The country developed since
all the people began to build their houses near the castle, on the mountain.
In 1268 there were about
270 inhabitants.
In 1500 there were
approximately 1000 (news from tax documents).
In 1657 there was a
terrible epidemic of plague: from 1850 inhabitants remained only 650 (1200
died).
At the beginning of 1800
there were nearly 3500 inhabitants.
From 1870 on (about 3400
inhabitants) a strong sad emigration began towards the new world. It was a
period of scarcity, misery, hunger and diseases. In 1871 about 50 children died
for the smallpox disease.
In 1901 the 85 % of the
inhabitants were illiterate
Today there are nearly 1000
inhabitants.
