Database Mail on a cluster
If you are unable to get Database Mail to send e-mails when the SQL Server 2005 instance is on a cluster, try adding an alias for the virtual server. You can easily add aliases using the SQL Server Configuration Manager tool

Sorry to sound like I'm in a huff, though I am a little frustrated. Of the messages in the extremely large pool that are legitimate, I found that they looked to be received correctly but perhaps got 'stale'.

Before getting yourself all up in a huff, have you tried searching the logs for one of those messages to see what actually happened. Start at step one first
