It’s never easy comparing Nikon and Canon. The two camera companies almost appear to Nikon D50 / D70s (Entry) - Canon 400D (Entry) - Nikon D80 ((Entry – Mid) However, the most interesting comparison in my view is the D200 vs 5D.

The only thing I would have got he D70 for is the flash command, as I don't use that I got the D50. Price versus value the D50 has to be the best deal in ANY DSLR at the moment. I did get the 18-70 lens though

I think the D50 is better for the price. The D70(s) has more functions, etc, but they are a waste if you don't use them. So if both are at the same price, go for the D70, but if the difference is a lot, then D50 is perfect.

The D50 is a smaller, more compact camera compared to the D70. For some, that's a possitive, for others it isn't. Both are great cameras and you'll take fantastic pictures with either

I bought a used D70 for this same reason and use it as a back up to my D200. D80 is limited in my opinion and the extra mega pixels are not needed. There has to be a good reason why Nikon is pushing this camera on consumers so much.
