Objective BASTARDO

This BASTARDO variant, proposed by Sergio in 1992, is the one that got more success (that is, the one that we play more frequently).
To play it you need, in addition to the chessboard and the pieces, a pack of tarots. If you lack tarots, you may try to use normal game cards or something similar.

Objectives, according to the casted tarot, are :

Minor Arcana

1To have only the King left.
If you have this objective, you win AFTER the move of the player that take your last piece and you have only your King left.
This means that if that player reaches his objective taking your last piece, he is the winner.
2Two objectives with Amazon.
This objective has to be declared. In fact, if you casted this card, you substitute your Tower with an Amazon before the game starts.
In exchange for this, you must cast two other objectives, keeping them secret (and discarding all 2, all Kings and the cards that indicate to destroy your Corner). You win reaching both the objectives, in the order you prefer. In addition, when you reach one of the objectives, you must declare it.
3The team.
Choose a player that is unsatisfied with his objective. If no-one wants to change his objective, you cast another card. If, on the contrary, someone wants to do it, in this game you and him become a team.
The team casts three cards and chooses one objective for each of the two players.
The team wins when one of his players reaches his objective.
The team loses when one of his players has his King taken. The one that took that King takes also the other player's King and all his remaining pieces.
4To check three times consecutively.
To reach the three checks, you may add all the checks, given to the same or to different players, during consecutive turns.
Multiple checks (i.e. more than one check with one move) are counted like they were indipendent checks. Also the checks caused by another player's move are counted.
The check sequence has not to be interrupted, that is, in each turn you must give at least one check.
The count has not to be declared (you keep it on your own).
You win in the move in which you give the third check.
5To take five Pawns.
If you have this objective, you win when you take the fifth Pawn.
You may count also Pawns that you obtain taking others' Kings.
6To destroy Temple corner.
You have to take the King that starts in the corner that you must destroy : you win in the move in which you take it.
If some other player takes that King, your objective become to take his King.

If you have to destroy your own corner, you become a common target. You must declare this objective, and CHOOSE another objective (the one that you like more), keeping it secret. This become your new objective.
In exchange for this, each other player wins either reaching his own objective or destroying your corner.
7To destroy Shadow-dancer's corner.

8To destroy C corner.

9To destroy Golden corner.
See objective n. 6.
10To take ten pieces.
You win in the move in which you take the tenth piece.
In the case of stalemate or draw, you may count also your left pieces.
PageTHE PLAGUE.
This objective has to be declared. In addition, in one game, only one player may have this objective. If another player has already this objective, you have to cast another card.
If you have this objective, you are The Plague and all your pieces are infected. If another player's piece takes one of yours, it dies and you take it (while the other player takes your infected piece).
Your aim is to take more pieces than every other player. This is verified at the end of the game, whether you are still in the game or not, prevailing over any other objective.
The Plague is the only objective with which you can win after have been destroyed.
KnightTHE DEATH.
Your Knight is The Death. It can either move like a Knight (and eventually take another piece) or shift over any free cell on the chessboard.
The Death is never really taken. If an opponent takes it you may, at any turn of yours, decide to shift it on a free cell on the chessboard (this is your move in that turn). In addition, no-one (you included) may count The Death amongst the pieces he has taken.
The aim of The Death is to kill all the opponents and be the last piece on the chessboard (that is, ideally, take your King with The Death).
QueenTHE QUEEN.
This is a female objective. Your King is, in reality, a Queen, and moves like a Queen. Like for the King, if you have your Queen taken, you are off the game.
Your aim is to take a King with your Queen.
You may not take, with your Queen, a King that stands in its starting corner.
If you take another Queen or The Plague King you don't win.
In addition, you don't win taking a King with another piece that is not the Queen, excluding the case in which you take the Spectre King with an Amazon, but only if it is the only King left in the game.
If it is proved that there isn't any King left in the game (so you can't win), at your turn you may get off the game taking all your pieces, waiting the end of the game hoping to win in the case of stalemate or draw with the greatest number of pieces.
KingTHE SPECTRE KING.
Your King is The Spectre King, and can be taken only by an Amazon. Any other piece that tries to take it dies, and you take it (except The Death, that is returned at his owner).
Even a Spectre King dies when he tries to take another Spectre King.
The Spectre King is immune to Plague.
If the Spectre King remains alone (it is your last piece) you may retire it and put it amongst the pieces you have taken.
Your aim is to destroy all opponents.

Major Arcana

If you cast any Major Arcana, you may cast four cards and choose your objective amongst that cards. Any other Major Arcana is substituted casting only one plus card.



BASTARDO Halloween

This variant has been proposed by Sergio on the occasion of 1995 Halloween.
It uses some concept defined in the Objective BASTARDO.

To make the game the more gruesome, we made:

The objective is the same of classic BASTARDO: to have fun ... and take care the other players don't !



Dynamic BASTARDO

This variant has been proposed by Roberto on the occasion of the 1993 tournament, whose winner has appointed to the title of "Gran BASTARDO" (Big BASTARDO).
It uses a dynamical initial disposition, different at every game.

To this purpose you begin the game with an empty chessbord and then, at any turn, each player put one of his pieces in a cell. The only constraints are :

When all the pieces are disposed, following the same order, the real game starts and it is played like a normal BASTARDO game, except for it to often begin with a tremendous massacre in which every player satisfies his worst istincts !



BASTARDO for President

This variant, proposed by Sergio in 1996, tends to make the game the more hard by hiding the King.
In fact, in this case the King left his place to a President, that may be any piece (King included!) and that substitutes the King quite wholly.

To play this game you need to use the mentioned tarot cards (see Objective BASTARDO) even though you may use other kind of cards or something similar.
Each player casts one card by lot and keeps it secret. This card indicates which of his pieces is the President.
KingYour President is the King.
QueenYour President is the Tower.
KnightYour President is the Knight.
PageYour President is the Bishop.
1-4Your President is the Pawn in the corresponding position.
Pawn positions are 1 2 3 4 from the center towards the outer side.
Any other card is discarded and you pick another up.

The game is played like a normal BASTARDO game, except that you must take the Presidents and not the Kings. No player knows which piece he has to take to win !
So, it is every player's duty to declare when his President has been taken.
As a BASTARDO, he could try to cheat and hide this fact, but at the end of the game each player shows his card, so the one who cheated is brought to light and other players can take severe measures against him !
