ROVE: Hai un aspetto magnifico. Come va?

RC: Benissimo. Mi sto davvero divertendo. In realtà il tour è cominciato da circa 3 settimane, ma le ultime due sono state proprio rilassate.

ROVE: Questo doveva essere il tuo anno di ferie, oppure un anno di ferie solo dal recitare?

RC: Um, sì, sono stato sempre in giro con la band quest'anno. Succede a cicli, più o meno ogni due anni. In linea di massima prendersi un anno di libertà equivaleva soprattutto a non andar via per 6 mesi. Perché è questo quello che faccio. Me ne vado all'estero per fare un film e succede veramente che tu stai letteralmente via per 6 mesi. E non puoi nemmeno prenderti un weekend libero e tornartene a casa se stai girando in Marocco, è un pò difficile trovare i collegamenti aerei.

(risate)

ROVE: Non ti vedevo dal gran matrimonio in Aprile. Come sta andando?

RC: Sta andando tutto SPLENDIDAMENTE!!! (rimarca col tono la parola e fa un GRAN sorriso!!)

ROVE: Ottimo. Mi fa piacere.

Russell sorride e il pubblico ride.

ROVE: Come? Come? Lo sono! Perché non dovrei esserlo?

RC: E adesso siamo incinti, naturalmente.

ROVE: Sì, benissimo per voi.

RC: E' successo piuttosto in fretta. Non si è trattato di qualcosa di assolutamente pianificato. Ma era comunque previsto, sposarsi , avere dei bambini, ma non sapevo che sarebbe successo tutto in una settimana.

(risate)

RC: Ooops!!! Ma suppongo, che sia stato perché ci, ci, noi ci siamo tenuti a distanza l'uno dall'altra per alcuni mesi prima del matrimonio.

ROVE: Davvero l'avete fatto? No, perché si dice che stessero facendo così Jennifer Lopez e Ben Affleck.

RC: Non ne ho idea nè commenti.

(Molte risate)

RC: Mi spiace, ma non sono in grado di darti una mano con le vite di JLo e BLo.

(Molte risate mentre Russell fa delle facce buffe)

ROVE & RC: BLo.

RC: E' proprio un brutto nome, vero?

ROVE: Di solito si riuniscono in Bennifer. Tutti li chiamano semplicemente Bennifer.

RC: Andiamo avanti.

ROVE: Lasciamo perdere.

RC: Siamo stati per qualche tempo distanti nel senso che, ovviamente stavamo assieme e organizzavamo tutto quel che riguardava le nozze, nel senso che non dormivamo nello stesso letto, Rove.

ROVE: E per quale motivo?

RC: Così, um, ci sarebbe stato un sacco di energia repressa. (Russell ride)

(Risate)

RC: Non volevo essere come i miei amici, sai (facendo il tono da ubriaco) "La mia prima notte di nozze ero troppo ubriaco" Voglio dire é davvero orribile, sai. Hai fatto tutti questi sforzi per sposarti, penso che dovresti consumare il matrimonio, se si può dire così.

ROVE: Bello. Mi piace.

(Russell ridacchia e strabuzza gli occhi a Rove, il pubblico ride)

RC: Sta tentando di fingersi sincero.

ROVE: Ma io SONO sincero.

RC: Lui è sincero.

ROVE: Sarai un papà "chioccia"?

RC: Um, sì, in effetti lui è ancora un feto quindi le comunicazioni sono un pò (qui manca il resto della frase)

ROVE: Stai dicendo "lui", è sicuramente un maschio?

RC: Al momento a senso unico.

ROVE: Ma è senza dubbio un maschio?

RC: Non mi risponde. E' sicuramente un maschio, sì, è un maschio, abbiamo visto le foto, ha uno scroto.

ROVE: Eccellente. Buone notizie. Sono davvero sincero su questo. E come sta Danielle? E' raggiante?

RC: Sì, lo è. I primi 3 mesi era come intontita per la maggior parte del tempo. Ma ora ha ripreso a fare esercizio e la sta vivendo bene, sai. Per cui, ovviamente non sono io che la sto affrontando in modo diretto, ma penso che buona parte della cosa, stia più nel riuscire ad abituarsici che nel fatto che finisca o che diventi più semplice. Lei è solo riuscita a farci abbastanza l'abitudine e alcuni giorni sono peggiori di altri.

ROVE: Le persone fanno, probabilmente tu stesso lo fai, ma tu sei il padre e quindi è ovvio, le persone si avvicinano per toccarle la pancia?

RC: Sì, ne parlavo con lei proprio l'altra notte, perché lo faccio tutto il tempo. Vedo una signora incinta o che mi viene presentata o in altri casi, io devo assolutamente (comincia a parlare con la pancia di Rove). Lo facevo veramente con la moglie di un mio amico, un tale di nome Brian Grazer (n.d.t. Grazer è il produttore di "A Beautiful Mind"), sua moglie Gigi aspetta un bambino, stanno per avere un altro figlio. Ed apparentemente, quando era incinta la volta precedente, è stato per tutto il periodo della campagna pubblicitaria per "A Beautiful Mind", quindi io regolarmente me ne stavo in continuazione a parlare con il suo stomaco. Allora lei mi chiedeva di parlare ancora. E quando mi trovavo a metà della conversazione, davanti a suo marito, lei diceva: "puoi farlo a voce un pò più bassa?" (risate, Russell fa una faccia buffa e si allontana dalla pancia). E' meglio che la smetta adesso. Sapete è buffo, lo so che lo faranno tutti, e devo solo cercare di prenderla con calma. In realtà non è il mio territorio, suppongo che si debba consentire alle persone di dire buongiorno alla propria maniera.

ROVE: E la band sta andando. Va tutto bene con i ragazzi.

RC: Fantastico. Gli spettacoli che abbiamo fatto a Chicago sono stati grandi. E ne abbiamo fatto uno a Winnipeg in Canada. Che è un posto dove ho fatto un film, er... 12 anni fa, più o meno. E il regista ed io ci siamo mantenuti in radi contatti da allora e ha sentito dire che saremmo stati a Chicago per parecchio tempo quindi mi ha chiamato e fatto venire i sensi di colpa. Così siamo andati su in Canada. In effetti eravamo in questo piccolo teatro alla moda, chiamato ??? (manca la trascrizione del nome) ma poi è stato spostato. Lo hanno spostato al Winnipeg Cultural Entertainment Center, dove ci si siede in poltroncine di velluto rosso. La qual cosa è insolita, perché noi suoniamo nei bar, quanto meno dove c'è alcohol a disposizione. E, siamo usciti in scena e in un certo senso c'era come un qualcosa di diverso nell'aria, tutti seduti nelle loro poltrone di velluto rosso e via dicendo. Ma abbiamo finito per divertirci. E' andata. Molti degli spettacoli del tour sono stati fantastici. Veramente non vediamo l'ora, non siamo mai stati a Hobart quindi dovrebbe essere divertente. Stiamo per fare rock in Tasmania, amico. Domani sera, a quest'ora, quando tu sarai qui a fare il tuo show e così via, io sarò a far fare rock alla Tasmania.

ROVE: Fare rock in Tasmania è molto coraggioso. Ora la clip di "Never Be Alone", le scene con te e Chrissie Hynde, le vostre scene, è stata gitrata a Nana Glen?

RC: Sì, impigrendosi (ride). So come andare a scovare la locotion, vero? Torneremo al ruscello.

ROVE: Qui c'è una bella foto in cui tu hai una, sei seduto accanto a un falò da campo, sembra che tu abbia una tazza Crocodile Hunter (n.d.t. Sulla tazza c'è il disegno e la scritta "Cacciatore di coccodrilli". Certamente un riferimento a Steve Irwin, il celebre cacciatore di coccodrilli amico di Russell che dirige l'Australia Zoo)

RC: Sì, ho una tazza Crocodile Hunter.

ROVE: Era intenzionale.

RC: Assolutamente.

ROVE: Era un piccolo messaggio subliminale, Steve. (n.d.t. anche qui certamente un riferimento a Steve Irwin).

RC: Era solo un piccolo buongiorno per lui, ma anche perché l'ambientazione della clip e così australiana perché è tutta sul lavorare con il bestiame e andare a cavallo e questo genere di cose. Ma la cosa principale, l'idea dietro la clip è il contrasto. Chrissie ha detto che era disponibile in un determinato periodo, quindi abbiamo mandato una squadra in Inghilterra per girare la sua parte. Io ero convinto che se riprendevamo lei che si occupava dei suoi impegni di giorno, e poi riprendevamo me che mi occupavo dei miei impegni alla fattoria, e mettevamo le due cose insieme, avremmo ottenuto lo stesso contrasto, la stessa diversa opinione, due prospettive differenti della stessa situazione che c'è nella canzone. E ha funzionato davvero bene.

ROVE: Ok, time to say hello to our next guest. He's an Oscar winning performer who's going to don his musician's hat as he tours with his band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts. They've got a new CD out, it's Other Ways of Speaking. The tour starts tomorrow night in Hobart, then Melbourne at Mercury Lounge on Friday, Perth on Saturday, Brisbane next week, then ???? and the final gig at Sydney's Metro Saturday, the 11th of October. Tickets on sale now. Welcoming back to the show Russell Crowe.
There is some talk over the applause that I can't make out. I think it's something to do with Russell running into the prior guest.
ROVE: You look fantastic. How are you going??
RC: Pretty good actually. Yeah. I'm having a really nice time of it. This tour is actually been going for about 3 months, but the last couple of weeks have been quite easy. We've sort of backed off a little bit. Save some energy for these next few weeks.
ROVE: This was to be your year off, or that just a year off acting?
RC: Um, yeah, I was always going to tour this year with the band. It comes around in cycles, sort of every 24 months or so. It was mainly about, taking a year off was mainly about not going away for 6 months. 'Cause that's what I do. I go off tomake a film and it's really, literally you're away for 6 months. And you can't like take a weekend off and come home when you're shooting in Morocco, it's a little difficult to get the connecting flights.

ROVE: I haven't seen you since the big wedding in April. How's everything going??
RC: Everything is going SPLENDIDLY!!! (accents the word and BIG smile!! :)
ROVE: Excellent. I'm so glad.
Russell smiles, the crowd laughs
ROVE: What? What? I am! Why wouldn't I be?
RC: And we're pregnant now, of course.
ROVE: Yes, way to go.
RC: It happened rather quickly. That wasn't necessarily an absolute plan. But it was a broad plan, get married have kids, I didn't know it was going to be within a week of each other.
laughter
RC: Ooops!!! But I suppose, 'cause we, we, we um hid ourselves away from each other for a few months before the wedding.
ROVE: Did you really? 'Cause there's rumors that Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were doing that.
RC: I have no idea and I have no comment,
LOTS of laughter.
RC: Sorry, I can't help you with the lives of JLo and BLo.
LOTS of laughter. Russell makes faces!!
ROVE & RC: BLo.
RC: That's a really bad name, isn't it??
ROVE: They usually get thrown together a Bennifer. Everyone just calls the two of them Bennifer.
RC: Let's move on.
ROVE: Forget about them.
RC: We'd spent a bit of time apart in terms of, obviously we got together to, and organized the wedding stuff, in terms of not sharing the same bed, Rove.
ROVE: And what was the reason for that?
RC: So, um, there would be a large amount of pent up energy. (Russell smiles)
Laughter
RC: I didn't want to be one of my mates, you know (sounding drunk) "On my wedding night I was too pissed" I mean that's just horrible, you know. You've gone to all this effort to get married, I think you should consummate the marriage, so to speak.
ROVE: That's nice. I like that.
(Russell giggles and roles his eyes at Rove, crowd laughs)
RC: He's trying to be genuine.
ROVE: I AM being genuine.
RC: He's being genuine.
ROVE: Are you getting "clucky" as a Dad?
RC: Um, yeah, well he's still a fetus and everything so the communication stuff is a little
ROVE: You're saying he, definitely a boy?
RC: one way at the moment
ROVE: It's definitely a boy though?
RC: he's not answering me back. He's definitely a boy, yes it is a boy, we've seen the photographs, he has a scrotum.
ROVE: Excellent. Good news. I'm very genuine about that. And how is Danielle going? Is she radiant?
RC: Yeah, she is. The first 3 months she was kind of woozy most of the time. But now she's exercising again and really quite enjoying it, you know. So, obviously I'm not going though it, in such a direct thing, but I think a lot of the stuff, it's more like getting used to stuff rather than it ever stops or is easier. She just gets sort of used to it and some days are harder than others.
ROVE: Are people doing, you probably do it yourself, you're the father so it's Ok. Are people coming up and touching her belly?
RC: Yeah, I was actually just talking about that with her the other night, because I do that all the time. I see a pregnant lady that I'm introduced or whatever I got to (he starts talking to Rove's belly). I was actually doing to a friend of mine's wife, this guy called Brian Grazer, his wife Gigi is pregnant, their having another baby. And apparently, when she was pregnant before, it was all the way through the A Beautiful Mind campaign, so I was continuously talking to her stomach on a regular basis. So she asked me to talk again. And as I was halfway through the conversation, in front of her husband, she said "can you do that a bit lower." (laughter, Russell makes a face and pulls away). I better stop this now. You know it's funny, cause I know everybody is gonna do it, and I just gotta be sort of cool about it. It's not really my territory, I suppose you must allow people to say G'day in their own way.
ROVE: And has the band going. All going well with the boys.
RC: Fantastic, man. The shows we did in Chicago were great. We actually did a show in Winnipeg in Canada. Which is a place I did a movie in, er...12 years ago, something like that. And, the director and I have kept in loose contact over the years and he heard that we were going to be in Chicago for such a long time so he kind of rang me up and he put the guilt trip on me. So we slipped up to Canada. We were actually booked into this one little theater, which was going to be cool, called the ??? but then the moved it. They moved it to the Winnipeg Cultural Entertainment Center thing, where everyone sits in red velvet seats. Which is unusual, because we play in sort of bars, at least where alcohol is available. And, we kind of came out and there was kind of a different vibe in the air, everybody sitting in their velvet seats and stuff. But we ended up having a fun time. It went off. Much of the shows on the tour have been fantastic. We're really looking forward to, we've never been to Hobart so that should be fun. We're going to rock in Tasmania, man. Tomorrow night, at this time, when you're here doing your show and everything, I am going to be rocking Tasmania.
ROVE: Rocking Tassie to it's very heart. Now your clip to Never Be Alone the scenes with you and Chrissie Hynde in it, your scenes, was that shot on the farm in Nana Glen?
RC: Yeah, getting lazy (laughs). I know how to do the location scouts, don't I? We'll go back by the creek.
ROVE: There's a great shot here where you've got a, you're sitting around the campfire, looks like you've got a Crocodile Hunter mug.
RC: I've got a Crocodile Hunter mug. Yeah.
ROVE: Was that intentional
RC: Absolutely
ROVE: was that a little subliminal message Steve
RC: It was just a little G'day to him, but also, sort of because the setting of the clip is so Australian because it's all about working the cattle and riding horses and all that sort of stuff. But the main thing, the idea behind the clip is the contrast. Chrissie said that she was available at a certain time, so we sent a crew to England to shoot her section. I just knew that if we shot her going about her business on day, and then we shot me going about my business on the farm, and we put the two together, it would have the same contrast, the same different opinion , two different perspectives of the same situation as the song has. It worked very nicely.
