Ecco il discorso di ringraziamento di Russell:
"Il nome di mio nonno era Stan Wemyss. Era un operatore
cinematografico nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Mio zio David,
David William Crowe, e' morto l'anno scorso all'eta' di 66 anni.
Vorrei ringraziare l'Academy per qualcosa che trovo piuttosto
sorprendente e dedicarla ai due uomini che continuano a fornirmi
ispirazione.
Vorrei anche ringraziare mia mamma e mio papa', e suppongo
che non li possa mai ringraziare sufficientemente.
Anche un cast incredibile: Joaquin Phoenix, Connie
Nielsen,
Djimon Hounsou, Ralf Moeller, Spencer Treat Clark, il magnifico
Richard Harris, il defunto Oliver Reed, Tomas Arana, Tommy
Flanagan,
Derek Jacobi e tutti gli altri.
DreamWorks - una grande compagnia che apporta un contributo
vitale ed elettrizzante a questa forma d'arte. Doug Wick, David
Franzoni, Bruno Lustig e Terry Needham e una magnifica squadra
raccolta in 22 paesi del mondo.
Le persone che lavorano per me, che lavorano con me, la mia
cavalleria personale - George Freeman, Alan Hergott, Larry

Pero' davvero, gente, sapete, io devo questo ad una persona,
e il suo nome e' Ridley Scott.
Sapete, se siete cresciuti nei sobborghi di Sydney o Auckland,
o di Newcastle come Ridley o Jamie Bell, o nei sobborghi di
qualunque posto, allora sapete che un sogno come questo puo'
sembrare vagamente ridicolo e completamente irragiungibile.
Pero' questo momento e' direttamente collegato a quelle fantasie
dell'infanzia. E per chiunque si trovi completamente svantaggiato
e deve far affidamento unicamente sul suo coraggio... sappiate
che e' possibile.
Grazie davvero."
(N.B.: La medaglia che Russell aveva appuntato sullo smoking
di Armani e' la MBE (Member of the British Empire) del suo defunto
nonno Stan Wemyss. Questa gli era stata assegnata dalla Regina
d'Inghilterra per il suo lavoro di fotografo durante la Seconda
Guerra Mondiale.)

My grandfather's name was Stan Wemyss*. He
was a cinematographer in the Second World War. My uncle David, David
William Crowe, he died last year at the age of 66. I'd like to thank the
Academy for something which is pretty surprising and dedicate it to two
men who still continue to inspire me.
I'd also like to thank my Mum and Dad, who
I just don't thank enough I suppose.
And an incredible cast: Joaquin Phoenix,
Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, Ralf Moeller, Spencer Treat Clark, the
magnificent Richard Harris, the late Oliver Reed, Tomas Arana, Tommy
Flanagan, Derek Jacobi and everybody else.

You know, when you grow up in the suburbs
of Sydney or Auckland, or Newcastle like Ridley or Jamie Bell. Or the
suburbs of anywhere, you know a dream like this seems kind of vaguely
ludicrous and completely unobtainable. But this moment is directly
connected to those childhood imaginings. And for anybody who's on the
downside of advantage and relying purely on courage . . . it's possible.
