None None Distribution: San Diego County, Riverside County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, Fresno County, Mendocino County, Monterey County, Napa County, San Benito County, Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County, San Mateo County; Baja California, Mexico Habitat: This showy lily grows in mesic openings in sage scrub, chaparral, and perennial grasslands; sometimes in conjunction with clay substrates.. Chocolate Lily is uncommon north of Magee Road near the Riverside County line in openings in the chaparral; also on the ridgeline at Rancho Cielo southwest of Mount Israel Road in open chaparral.. Thomas reports the Chocolate Lily for the Santa Cruz Mountains, and near Hillsborough and San Jose.. Wiggins reports the Chocolate Lily on the western flanks of the Sierra Juarez from Tijuana south to Ensenada; however, only a single voucher collection is found from Baja California (south of Tijuana) at the herbarium of the San Diego Natural History Museum.

Idaho Mountain Wildflowers Lily Family: Liliaceae (page 3 of 5) | Fritillaria, or rice-roots: Fritillaria spp.. Lewis and Clark, camped on the Clearwater River, collected this attractive little plant on May 8, 1806; the same day they gathered a specimen of the spring blooming glacier lily, shown on the next page.. The Chocolate lily, Fritillaria (left) is far less common, and it blooms a month or so later than the yellow bell shown above.. It and the related checker lily (right) resemble Old World plants with the checkered markings common to many fritillaria.. One usually encounters the chocolate lily growing as a solitary plant in open sagebrush and dry grassy meadows from mid- to subalpine elevations in our mountains.. While not showy, the chocolate lily, with its thin, blue-green, frosted leaves, mottled, deep brownish-purple tepals and yellow anthers is a striking plant.. A very similar plant, the Checker lily (or Rice-root checker Lily), Fritillaria var.
